Expository preaching is preaching that submits itself to the shape and emphasis of the biblical text. The result is that the point of the sermon is the point of the passage. We believe expository preaching is not one of several legitimate "styles" of ministry, but is rather a biblical mandate (2 Tim. 4:2). Furthermore, it is the inevitable application of a sound view of Scripture. God's Word is clear, therefore it has a coherent and accessible message. God's Word is inerrant, therefore it is entirely reliable and truthful in all things. God's Word is sufficient, therefore no other source of wisdom or knowledge is necessary. God's Word is authoritative, therefore we have a responsibility to conform to its principles and commands. Expository preaching is the natural consequence of these convictions.

The key to drawing God's meaning out of the text is sound principles of interpretation, otherwise referred to as hermeneutics. We practice the literal, historical, grammatical method of interpretation. This means we read and interpret Scripture in its plain literal sense, leaving room for the biblical author to use symbolic and figurative language. We seek to understand what it meant to the original audience, and we thoroughly examine the grammar and syntax to reveal the major features of the author's argument along with the finer exegetical details that often shape and nuance the meaning.

Finally, true biblical exposition explains what the implications were for the original ancient audience and then bridges the gap of time by explaining the implications for the modern hearer.

Biblical exposition is at the very the heart of every expression of ministry at Saving Grace Bible Church.
